Creating Reality

Beyond Sustainability

February 15, 2009

“Sustainability, in a broad sense, is the capacity to maintain a certain process or state. It is now most frequently used in connection with biological and human systems. In an ecological context, sustainability can be defined as the ability of an ecosystem to maintain ecological processes, functions, biodiversity and productivity into the future.”
This is a definition of sustainability published by Wikipedia.

I read it today and it occurred to me suddenly: what if there is more? What if the opportunity is much greater than “maintaining process or state”, maintaining the status quo? Why stop at maintaining? Why not transform? Why not open to new opportunities that we have never dreamed of before?

It is wise, conscious and loving on the part of humans to repair the damage we have caused to nature, to Earth. It is a smart thing, a good thing, to reverse the way our life is organized, to change our destructive habits, to avoid further damage and to reinstate what has been broken or interrupted. It is a good thing to fix things.

But does nature really need fixing?

When I listen to the old oaks growing on the hill by my house, when a young cherry tree stops me as I pass by it to help me open to who I am exactly when I need help, when I feel the way slender and graceful eucalyptus trees shift and reorganize gently to open to sun or frost, it becomes clear to me that I am the student, they are the teachers.

Nature is present, aware, conscious as what it is, as who it is, effortlessly, naturally. Trees open and adjust to the reality around them. They are who they are only, fully, completely, holding space for everyone and everything else to open to their uniqueness. Gently, graciously, respectfully.

Whenever I open to their presence it becomes clear to me that I am the student, they are the teachers.

There are more ways to be than that of the mind. There are more ways to organize in relationship to this reality than the way of human society. What we are striving to achieve, what we are looking for, studying for, practicing for – love, harmony, balance, peace, enlightenment – is common in nature, it is normal in nature. It is normal for trees to be who they are, it is normal for humans to be who we are.

If we listen. If we open to the opportunity of nature being more than a fragile system that needs fixing and saving, if we accept nature as an ally, as a partner, as a peer, the opportunities of transformation and growth will become unlimited – because there are no limits in nature.

Question: I’ve recently seen some films and got quite confused. Have you seen or have any opinions about any of this, is it possible?

Answer: From all the movies you’ve mentioned I saw only “What the Bleep” and sat next to my husband when he was watching “Zeigeist”. I heard a lot about Secret but never saw it.

Is it possible? I don’t see why not, there is no limit to realities we can create, there is no end to points of view and perspectives. Based on my very scanty exposure to those sort of movies it seems to me that they are created from mind’s point of view. In all the movies I saw, or heard of, there is a separation, there is always “I” and the outside world that is doing something to me or that I have to do something with.

All those movies seem to focus on analyzing and revealing how the outside world, other people, other systems, control my reality, or how I can control reality such that I can get something that I want and don’t have, or so that I can be somebody I’m not now. This is mind’s perspective – being organized in relationship to the outside, needing to know, understand, explain, control, stay safe. Mind always believes that it is missing something and can only get it from outside of itself.

In my experience there is no such split in God. I am God. I create my reality. I take full responsibility for creating every aspect of my life and the world I live in. What other people do or did, what other systems were designed to do, doesn’t have anything to do with me, because I am not in any way controlled by them. Simply because I say I am not, I say I am responsibile for my life. I am God and there is not the smalest part of reality that I did not create by myself, for myself.

I feel that being God and being totally responsible for my reality, which allows me to create it however I want it, is much more fun that being mind, so I usually don’t watch movies that are organized from mind’s perspective.

Question: Of course it’s from mind perspective, I don’t know any other. Besides without mind it would not be anything to talk about, no words, no notions and no problem of recession in particular. Is it possible for the movie not to be organized from mind’s perspective at all?
I remember the text “Face to face with different reality” and I thought you can compare those films, especially “Zeitgeist Addendum” with the point of view of that military man. I’m also curious about God’s opinion about David Icke theories (”Beyond the cutting edge” is the most representative, I’ve forgotten to attach the Icke’s films to the list)

Answer: True, a movie created from God’s perspective would have much less talking in it, much more being.
There is a movie called “Whale Rider”. It is a movie about a girl, about 12 or so, becoming a head of a tribe that does not allow women, let alone girls, to become heads of the tribe.

The girl is simply who she is, fully present in her authority and her uniqueness. She is simply herself, even though she’s being admonished, punished, chased away. She persists, very gently, very respectfully, in simply being who she is. Being present as who she is, as God. Eventually the reality shifts for the whole tribe and the girl becomes recognized by others.

The girl doesn’t study and analyze the tradition, the system that is oppressing her, doesn’t try to find out where it came from, how did it begin, why did it begin. She doesn’t argue, she doesn’t fight. She doesn’t talk to people about the injustice of the system, she doesn’t try to convince others that she is right and make them see things her way, she doesn’t try to overthrow it, to revolt. She doesn’t try to find those that are guilty and punish them or demand compensation or take over the power.

She doesn’t talk much at all. She simply is who she is. The system that is trying to stop her is ineffective because she is not controlled by it, she is not dependent on it, because she chooses to be herself only, fully and completely. Because she holds space for herself to be who she is, she also holds space for the rest of the tribe to open to her, very gently, very respectfully. And finally they do, and she changes reality completely simply by being who she is, by being herself, by being God.

It is my sense, more and more that, while mind’s perspective is very abstract, includes lots of concepts, theories, ideas and generalities, other people’s perspectives and points of view, systems and influences beyond our reach or control, God’s perspective is very deeply personal. It is not about understanding, but about experiencing a situation, being in a situation, being yourself.

I can only experience a situation myself, how others experience it, how they see it, what they think, what they say, has nothing to do with my experience. What other people say reality is like has nothing to do with my experience of it.

While mind would ask: why, how, when, what for, the question from God’s perspective would be: who am I here? Who am I in this situation?
I watched “Anne of the Thousand Days” yesterday, the story of Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII. I actually listened to it more than watched it, I was preparing dinner, TV was on at the other end of the living room. Anne just gave birth to a girl and the terrible drama resulted. I thought: this almost makes me believe in destiny. All those people locked in a terrible struggle for king’s son. All the women and men killed, betrayed, all the religious upheavals, all the wars, suffering and pain … all for the king’s son. A son that will never sit on the throne, because there is Elizabeth. It made me think for a moment that it was a destiny of the king not to have a son, so that there would be a throne for Elizabeth. I considered it and another idea occurred to me: they did not recognize the opportunity they were presented with. It is not a matter of faith, destiny, preordained lives, it is a matter of presence. King, queen, their courtiers, church, their subjects, everyone believed that the king has to have a son. Everybody knew that a woman can not rule. It was not an opinion, a belief, not even a truth, it was simply what’s so, it was how things are, it was reality. No one would question it, no one could even consider the possibility of questioning it. And yet there was Elizabeth. They couldn’t recognize the opportunity and so they struggled, and suffered, and died. What would happen if they recognized it, I wondered. Reality was changing all around them. What would happen if they could recognize it, hold space for it, change with it? What would happen if they joined and supported Elizabeth in her growth, what would happen if they held space for her to become the most powerful monarch England has ever had? If they could be present with this possibility, what would happen to them? To the king and queen, what opening, what space could they have held for their country before Elizabeth ever came to the throne? I thought about it again today morning. I was reading news about the measures Obama is taking to deal with the economic crisis, particularly about the $500.000 cap on senior executives’ salaries. I thought about the senior executives’ salaries for some time now. Stories pop up in news all the time about the incredibly costly trash cans and private jets and I wonder: why are they doing this, what are they thinking? Those people are not stupid, the CEOs of companies that run and, for the most part, create the economic system of this country are not idiots. They must understand the situation, they must see what happens to the economy. I don’t quite believe that they are all sociopathic, greedy monsters, so why? Why are they doing those incredible things? Why are they spending money on luxuries when their companies are falling apart? I tried to understand, I read blogs and looked at forums, read articles and comments and I realized that it is not a question of “why”. As I read what the CEOs have to say, what their wifes have to say, what the investment bankers have to say, I realized that their reality is completely different than mine. What for me is an exuberant and lavish for them is normal. Not because they are greedy – simply because it is what’s so. This is how it is, this is how business is done. If you want to have the “top players” work for you, you have to pay them this much, simple as that. Or they will leave and go to your competition, and you will loose. It is not an opinion, a belief, not even a truth, it is simply what’s so, it is how things are, it is reality. No one would question it, no one could even consider the possibility of questioning it. Therefore they don’t, and continue to do things the way they always did, because this is simply how things are done. Few hundred years ago in England everybody was struggling desperately for the king’s son, even though no son was coming, now the financial world seems to strugle to keep their reality intact, even though it’s crumbling all around them. But there was Elizabeth, there was an opportunity, an opening, a change right in front of them. They couldn’t recognize it then. “What would happen if we could recognize it now?” I wondered today morning. If the financial executives could recognize it, if the CEOs could recognize it. Reality is changing all around them. What would happen if they could see it and, instead of being dragged into a new reality kicking and screaming, struggling and resisting, what would happen if they could hold space for it, open to it, change with it? What would happen if we could recognize the opportunity before the king and queen are dead and the old way collapses to make space for a new one?

To BE or to DO?

February 2, 2009

Who are you? Who am I? Why ask? Is this an important question? What does it matter anyway? When I find out who I am, well … won’t I still have to find out what to DO with that knowledge? Isn’t that the point – to find out what to do? What to do in life, what to do with life? To find the ultimate, the one, the true thing to do that makes my life meaningfull – the life purpose? “What should I do” was a question I was asking a lot when I left Poland. In Poland there was no need to ask this question, I knew exactly what to do. I had some room to make a choice or two inside of the path that was designated for me, but not much. I was to graduate from high school, I was to graduate from the University, I was to get a job, to get married and to have children. I had some say as to what field I wanted to work in, whom I would marry and how many kids we would have … and that’s about as far as my choices went. But then I left and everything changed. There was no path anymore and I was lost. The search for a life purpose begun, the search for the answer to “what to do” question. The hope that, once I find out what I am supposed to do I will know why I’m here, I will know that I have the right to be here, I will know what is the right thing to do and I will be doing it, I will be a good girl. Safe girl. The realization was coming for quite a while now, yesterday it just popped up: “what should I do” is the wrong question. The question to ask is “who am I?”. I realized that I had it all backwards. I was trying to find out what to DO in hope that the answer would provide me with an identity, with the sense of who I am. I realized yesterday that who I am is not the result of what I do. What I do is the result of who I am. What I do will not provide me with identity, with the sense of being myself – being myself will provide me with a sense of being myself. Once I am myself – I am myself. I am not for a purpose, I am not for a reason. I am. And once I realize, or choose, or decide who I am – what I do follow naturally, I just do what I do. My dog doesn’t have to stop and consider what to do. She is a dog, she does what a dog does. What she does is an expression, a reflection of who she is. I am who I am. I do what I do. What I do is a reflection, an expression of who I am. Mind is not equipped to comprehend this idea. For mind there is only outside, the threatening outside that has to be dealt with, controlled, protected against, by doing. From mind’s point of view knowing who I am will not keep me safe and protected (mind is all about being safe and protected) therefore knowing who I am is useless. In a society organized by mind the question “who am I” is not being asked much. I was certainly not asking it back in Poland. It didn’t seem important to ask it. I was … oh, whatever … human, person, Patrycja, student, woman, what-have-you, doesn’t matter. I just was, just like everyone else was, just like all the other people around me were. Having made this choice, however unconsciously, all that I could do was what they were doing. Whatever everyone else was doing. Because this is who I was, I was who everyone else was. I had some little room to make a choice or two inside of who I was, but not much. I had some say as to how I look, what I eat, how I dress, how I vote, how good or bad, nice or mean, industrious or lazy I am … and that’s about as far as my choices went. I could not find my own path when who I am was what everyone else was. I could not find my own, unique, original purpose when who I am was who everyone else was. To find my own purpose, to find out what I should do in this life, why I was born in this life at this time, I first had to realize, or choose, or decide who I am. Once I am who I am I do what I do and doing it is simply an expression of who I am, not the other way around.

The Ultimate Responsibility

January 11, 2009

My husband has been working on a project for quite some time now. It is a big, complex project, involving a whole team of managers (my husband being one of them) and a large group of technicians. It was a cool project, exciting and fun at first, and then everything started falling apart. As the time of completion drew nearer it became apparent that the project is not even half done. On closer look it turned out that what was done was done wrong, that the team executing it didn’t really know what they were doing. The project, slowly but surely, started turning into a nightmare. One professional after another was brought in to fix the damage and turned out to be unqualified, unable, unreliable. The budget was shrinking rapidly, the deadline was far gone and forgotten and everyday there was more anger, more frustration, more resentment and more blame. [click to continue…]
